COHORT: The cohort includes preadolescents aged 8 to 10 years living in the rural Pune region, as well as their parents and their future offspring.

PROCESS: The YUVAAN project is an ongoing initiative that aims to establish a multigenerational cohort of preadolescents from rural Maharashtra to study their growth trajectory and nutritional status. The key objectives include: 1) understanding and influencing trajectories of growth among rural preadolescents (8-10 years old) and their parents over a period of 15 years; 2) investigating the intergenerational patterns of non-communicable disease health risks (including muscle and bone health) among preadolescents (8-10 years old) including the health of their parents and future offspring in rural areas; 3) identifying socio-ecological determinants of health (i.e., climate change impacts, sociocultural factors) associated with growth trajectories and intergenerational non-communicable disease health risk.

APPROACH: The YoUng adolescents’ behaViour, musculoskeletAl heAlth, growth & Nutrition (YUVAAN) project is an initiative by the Hirabai Cowasji Jehangir Medical Research Institute (HCJMRI) to establish a multigenerational cohort of preadolescents, their parents, and future offspring of the preadolsecents in rural areas of India.

CONTEXT: Currently, comprehensive longitudinal data on the growth and development of rural Indian children are unavailable. Multigenerational cohorts capturing the broad range of socioecological determinants of health, temporal changes, and intergenerational risk transmission do not exist in India.
